Wilco - A Ghost Is Born: 7 (B+)

# [alt-country] [I would boycott it even if not because (1) it's padded to make it a double LP, (2) it has a 15 minute representation of Tweedy's migraines, and (3) it has another 10 minute long over-indulgence. Shitcan those two long "songs," and you have a really good 42 minute album.]

Social Distortion - White Light White Heat White Trash

:-|

The Scene Is Now - The Oily Years 1983-1993: 7 (B+)

I don't buy best ofs at B plus.

The Cramps - Bad Music for Bad People: 7.5 (high B+)

# [best of]

The Cramps - Songs the Lord Taught Us [honorable mention]

:-)

Bad Religion - All Ages: 9 (A) [plus batch review]

Essentially contains 3 from Suffer, 4 from Generator, 5 from No Control and 7 from Against the Grain. I'll review the first two separately. The last two I listened to 3 times each and would probably give them both a 7.5 (high B+), which means in the normal course I would buy them. By the way, the fact that they are the most represented on this album is further proof that these two are their best.

Anyway, on No Control, this contains 5 of 15 songs, so it includes 1/3 of what is essentially an EP at 26:14. It also contains all the best songs off that album, so I'm not buying what is essentially an EP at full price to get 17 minutes of its lesser songs.

The 7 songs from Against the Grain are 7 of that album's 17 songs. This leaves off all songs on AG that are under 1:54 and only three over 2:15. The 7 songs clock in at 17:36, which is more than half of the 34:56 album, and it's obviously the better half, so I won't be buying that one either.

In summary, All Ages make No Control and Against the Grain redundant.

Atmosphere - Strictly Leakage: 7.5 (high B+)

Digital/limited edition vinyl only.

Serengeti & Polyphonic - Best of S&P: 7.5 (high B+)

Digital-only [Contains Tetradactyl in its entirety]

Madness - Compete Madness: 7 (B+)

# [ska/two tone/best of]

Madness - One Step Beyond: 7.5 (high B+)

I like this a hair better than Too Much Pressure by The Selecter. Of course I have the necessary albums by The Specials, and would add those two, but they are strangely not available. The Specials' albums are all in print and available at reasonable prices, which confirms my choices. In the end, I will add This Are Two Tone to the collection to help fill some of the gaps. I thought about the more comprehensive The 2 Tone Collection: A Checkered Past, but it's a fatbox. # [ska/two tone]

Moby - Go [placeholder]

Basically 5 songs from Play, 4 from 18, 3 from Hotel, a couple remixes, live tracks, a new single, etc. Since I already have Play, buying this would mean buying it for 7 songs from 18 and Hotel. Doesn’t seem worth it for an A- greatest hits that is essentially a weird hodgepodge. And I don’t like the extra remix disc as much as Christgau apparently did.

The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride [honorable mention]

:-)

Black Country, New Road - For the First Time [honorable mention]

:-)

Sho Madjozi - Limpopo Champions League: 7 (B+)

Digital only.

Lori McKenna - Christmas Is Right Here [honorable mention]

:-)

Burnt Sugar - Angels Over Oakanda [honorable mention]

:-) [Supposably on CD, but can't find one anywhere. Looked just out of curiousity because Christgau placed it at #5 for 2021.]

Self Esteem - Prioritise Pleasure

:-|

Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra - Promises

:-|

Squid - Bright Green Field

:-| [four listens]

Amyl and the Sniffers - Comfort to Me [honorable mention]

:-) [Vocals are irritating; music a little one-note. Five listens.]

Weather Station - Ignorance [honorable mention]

:-) [four listens]

Backxwash - I Lie Here Buried with My Rings and My Dresses [honorable mention]

:-)

Low - Hey What

:-|

Tyler, the Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost [honorable mention]

Japanese Breakfast - Jubilee

:-|

Snail Mail - Valentine [honorable mention]

:-)

The War on Drugs - I Don't Live Here Anymore [honorable mention]

Luna - Luna [EP]: 7 (B+)

Had to pick this up as an essential adjunct to their masterpiece, Penthouse. I also like the humorous reference to the Kids soundtrack. One of my favorite movies, very close to my teenage years in NYC a decade earlier. Soundtrack's pretty good too. [Two songs repeated on Lunafied]

Luna - Indian Summer [placeholder]

The only song on this that is not on Slide is "Egg Nog," which is on Best of Luna, which I'm going to pick up.

Luna - Lunafied: 8 (A-)

The only songs on here that are not on disc 2 of Best of Luna (import version) - "Happy New Year" and "Fly Into the Mystery" - are okay (listened three times), but I can do without them. And disc 2 has several songs not on this, so I'm going to try to find a reasonably priced copy of the Best of Luna import.

Aerosmith - Get Your Wings [honorable mention]

:-)

Aerosmith - Pump

:-|

Aerosmith - Draw the Line [honorable mention]

:-) [An important album in my youth. Listened to it again just now and this is where I end up.]

Aerosmith - Get a Grip

:-|

Richard Thompson - Across a Crowded Room: 7 (B+)

# [folk] [My favorite album of his, which is probably not saying much.]

Luna - Bonnie and Clyde / Chinatown [EP] [placeholder]

[Two titular songs from Penthouse, plus two songs on Lunafied, which I'm getting as the second disc of an import version of Best of Luna.]

Luna - Tell Me Do You Miss Me: 8 (A minus)

[Digital only, with limited edition vinyl it seems.]

Luna - EP [placeholder]

[Would get it if cheap, but it’s not, it's live, and it's Australian only.]

Gift of Gab - Finding Inspiration Somehow [honorable mention]

:-) [four listens]

Solange - When I Get Home

:-|

Edgar Winter - They Only Come Out at Night [honorable mention]

:-)

Tom Ze - Estudando o Pagode [honorable mention]

Richard Thompson - Hand of Kindness

:-( [His vocals are insufferable, the guitar is irritating, and the Celtic elements are jarring. A tuneless, embarrassing mess.]

Sunday, November 21, 2021

Lakou Mizik - HaitiaNola [honorable mention]

:-)

Michael Rother - Flammende Herzen [honorable mention]

:-)

They Might Be Giants - Apollo 18: 8.5 (high A-)

Various Artists - Rebel Music: 7.5 (high B+)

I don't buy multi-artist compilations at this level, plus it's just not available at reasonable prices (or on remastered CD) and it’s a relatively obscure compilation. It's also spotty. Literally all of the 8 or so keepers except maybe Gregory Isaacs’ “Rock Away" are on the re-issue, or I have them on other albums. So I listened once to the re-issue, but it’s also spotty except for the overlap. So I’m skipping this (and volume 2 which seems obscure and is not on Napster). I read about this in the Rough Guide book on reggae, where it was a "starred" review.

Duke Ellington - Money Jungle: X stars

I'm not qualified to rate jazz. Liked this though - sounded kind of like Monk, rather than Duke.

Various Artists - Steppin' Out: Disco's Greatest Hits: 7.5 (high B+)

I don't buy multi-artists compilations at this level.

Onetwothree - Onetwothree: 7.5 (high B+)

# [Swiss post-punk]

Big Thief - Two Hands: 7.5 (high B+)

Luna - The Days of Our Nights [honorable mention]

:-) [I'm a Luna completist, so I would want this on the shelves. It's their only studio album that's currently not. Thinking I hadn't bought it when it came out, I listened to it on Napster. Didn't recognize any of the songs, which is a bad sign for an album. Then I saw in my Amazon purchase history that I had bought it. Now I vaguely remember selling it back. Or maybe it's in the house somewhere. If I find it, I'll put it on the shelves. But I'm not re-buying it.] [Shortly later, I rebought it.]

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Live Bullet [honorable mention]

:-) [On many "best live album" lists]

Various - Zetrospective: Dancing in the Face of Adversity: 7.5 (high B+)

# [multi-artist comps]

French Frith Kaiser Thompson - Live, Love, Larf & Loaf [honorable mention]

:-)

Various Artists - New Jack City [honorable mention]

:-) [I thought it was rap, but it's R&B]

Dixie Chicks - Home [honorable mention]

:-)

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective: 8.5 (high A-)

Should have been a single disc.

Illuminati Hotties - Let Me Do One More [honorable mention]

:-)

Uncle Tupelo: 89/93: An Anthology: 8 (A-)

:-)

Firehose - If'n [honorable mention]

Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson [honorable mention]

Various Artists - Send I A Lion: A Nighthawk Reggae Joint: 7 (B+)

Don't buy multi-artists comps at B+, generally.

The Comet Is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery: 7 (B+)

# [jazz-ish]

Mexstep - Estere-Ere-O: 7 (B+)

Digital only.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken: 7.5 (high B+)

# [country/bluegrass]

Trouble Funk - Drop the Bomb: 7.5 (high B+)

# [go-go] See review of comp Go Go Crankin'. [Confusingly, there is also a later, perhaps unofficial, compilation from 2008 with the same name.]

The Leaving Trains - Kill Tunes: 7.5 (high B+)

Definitely in the market for this, but not at $20-25. And there's something nice about having nothing by this band other than Loser Illusion Pt. 0. But I'll probably cave one day and get it.

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes [honorable mention]

:-)

I.K. Dairo M.B.E. and His Blue Spots - I Remember [honorable mention]

:-)

Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies [honorable mention]

Joy Division - Closer: 9.5 (high A)

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures: 9 (A)

Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert [honorable mention]

:-) [Annoying title; even more annoying delivery] [five listens]

The Go-Go's - Beauty and the Beat [honorable mention]

:-)

They Might Be Giants - Dial-A-Song: 20 Years of They Might Be Giants: 8.5 (high A-)

In retrospect, I probably would have been better off with the single disc distillation of this called User's Guide. This goes on for a little long for me. But I have this, the single disc is OOP, and I'll give them the shelf space. Plus it got 5 stars in The New Rolling Stone Album Guide (from J.D. Considine, okay, but still, and he clearly is not a rabid fan).

They Might Be Giants - They Might Be Giants: 7.5 (high B+)

# [college pop] [Christgau and Hull both gave this a full A, so I guess I'm the one with no taste, plus I already own it, so I'm keeping it.]

They Might Be Giants - Flood: 7 (B+)

# [college pop]

They Might Be Giants - A User's Guide to They Might Be Giants [placeholder]

:-) [Hull thinks this is better than Dial-A-Song. Maybe it is, but I have the latter, and it has everything on this, other than "John Lee Supertaster" and "Clap Your Hands." Listened to each three times. I'm keeping Dial-A-Song, the first album, and Apollo 18 for this band, and nothing else.]

Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection [honorable mention]

:-) [I'm going with Christgau and Hull on him (Honky Chateau and Rock of the Westies), plus Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which is his best per Allmusic users and a personal favorite from youth. Plus the first Greatest Hits.

Ian Dury - New Boots and Panties!! [honorable mention]

:-) [Could be a B+, but # [pub rock] even if so, plus it's not available on CD anyway, except with extra tracks]

Boise Cover Band - Unoriginal Artists

Mickey Guyton - Remember Her Name

Dexys Midnight Runners - Too-Rye-Ay [honorable mention]

:-)

King Crimson - The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson [placeholder]

King Crimson - In the Wake of Poseidon

:-| [This completes my investigation of this band. I would listen to the comp Young Person's Guide, but it's not on Napster, and was never released on CD other than in Japan. Plus, in my listens I would have heard 11 out of its 15 tracks, and of those other 4, only one track was on a regular issue album - "Ladies of the Road" from Islands.]

Jimi Hendrix - Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix

Looked into Jimi one-disc comps. I'll stick with Smash Hits. This one, generally considered the best, has nothing not on Voodoo Child and the regular issue albums, except the studio version of Red House from the UK edition of the debut. In the end, the gestalt doesn’t hang together because it spans so much stylistically.

Robert Earl Keen - A Bigger Piece of Sky: 7.5 (high B+)
